Since I finished my doctorate degree at the University of Oxford and a brief post-doctorate fellowship at Japan Women’s University, I have been working at Open University of Japan, Nagoya University, and then the University of Tokyo. Since April 2022, I have been Director of the Center for Academic Writing at Komaba (CAWK), managing a new institution designed to enhance academic writing skills of U-Tokyo students.
I have been mostly working on British Romanticism, in particular, from a socio-historical perspective as well as from the viewpoint of the history of ideas and emotions. My recent research has begun to bend towards cultural negotiations between Europe and Asia, the reception / regeneration of English Romanticism in the early twentieth century.
My publications include Coleridge, Romanticism, and the Orient: Cultural Negotiations, co-edited with David Vallins and Seamus Perry (Bloomsbury, 2013), Cross-Cultural Negotiations: Romanticism, Mobility and the Orient, POETICA, vol.76 (Special Issue), co-edited with Felicity James (2011), and chapter contributions to Peter Cheyne (ed.), Imperfectionist Aesthetics in Art and Everyday Life (Routledge, 2022), Tee Vee-Yin, Romantic Environmental Sensibility: Nature, Class and Empire (Edinburgh University Press, 2022), Alex Watson and Laurence Williams (eds), British Romanticism in Asia: The Reception, Translation, and Transformation of Romantic Literature in India and East Asia (Macmillan, 2019), Peter Cheyne (ed.), Coleridge and Contemplation (Oxford University Press, 2017), Steve Clark and Masashi Suzuki (eds.), The Reception of Blake in the Orient (Continuum, 2006), and to Steve Clark and Tristanne Connolly (eds.), British Romanticism in European Perspective: Into the Eurozone (Palgrave, 2015).
